My Technics SL-D2 came with the rubber platter mat that originally came with it. Would there be any benefit to using an acrylic, leather, cork, wool or any other platter mat with this? If so, what would they be? Any major difference in sound? When using this, would I remove the rubber mat or place this directly on top? Thanks.

Only you can determine what would sound better. I personally don't believe this turntable would sound any better with another type of mat. The dampening of the rubber mat is very good.

The addition of another mat would raise the angle of the tone arm - you ideally want it level. Again, it really depends on the setup as to what would happen if you put another mat on top. I wouldn't advise stacking mats though.
