Montgomery Ward (later known as Wards) was an American department store chain, similar to Sears & Roebuck.
Founded as the world's first mail order business in 1872 by Aaron Montgomery Ward.
The company started as a mail-order catalog business and opened its first retail outlet store in Plymouth, IN in 1926
Its flagship retail store in Chicago was located on Michigan Avenue between Madison and Washington St.
In 1968, it merged with Container Corporation of America to become Marcor Inc until 1976 when it was acquired by Mobil Oil.
Mail order segment closed in 1985 and they went out of business in 2001.
In 2008 the name was restructured by catalog retailer Swiss Colony for an online retailer and as of this writing are still in operation.
